Freshwater Fisheries Workshop in Brazil

In May 2025, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) hosted a Global Freshwater Fisheries Workshop in Alter do Chão, Brazil, bringing together 58 participants from 12 countries, including TNC staff, local communities, government agencies and 23 partner organizations. Designed in response to participant priorities, the workshop featured interactive sessions on gender equity, sustainable finance, fisheries governance, climate adaptation, and data-driven management. The event also included site visits to local communities engaged in fisheries conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

2025 Workshop in Brazil Summary Report

This was the second Global Freshwater Fisheries workshop, serving to advance global, regional and local collaboration and innovation in freshwater fisheries co-management. By fostering cross-regional learning and highlighting community-led solutions, it addressed some of the most pressing challenges facing freshwater ecosystems today — such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable community financing. The inclusion of community partners and women leaders underscored the importance of inclusive governance and management to achieve lasting conservation outcomes.

The workshop supports The Nature Conservancy’s 2030 goals by advancing the improved management and protection of freshwater ecosystems — lakes, wetlands, and river systems — through shared learning on fisheries governance, data-driven management, and climate adaptation strategies. Equally important, the workshop elevated the voices of local partners and women leaders, particularly through community site visits and discussion circles, strengthening their ability to participate in decision-making platforms. These activities contribute to TNC’s goal of improving the security of fisheries and freshwater rights, ensuring that local communities are shaping the future of freshwater conservation.
